I don't always get paid to tell jokes. I often perform at open mics which are a place to practice jokes, performance, timing, inflection, stage presence and generally getting comfortable speaking in front of an audience. I do not get paid to perform at open mics. As a point of reference, a band may get paid to perform a concert, but they do not get paid to go to band practice. They practice their art to provide better performances at concerts and shows. Open mics are "band practice" for comedians. I practice more than I perform in shows because I am still in the "journeyman" phase of my stand up comedy career. Yet, I do get paid to "do comedy". I sometimes receive compensation in the form of non-monetary means. It is not entirely uncommon on the evening of a comedy show for me to receive food, beer, clothing, tips, discounts, Jello, laughter, applause, and on occasion even cash money. I am performing at a show in the very near future where for the very first time I will be paid in fish. Yes I said, "paid in fish". It is official, I have made it as a comedian. "So Long And Thanks For All The Fish" I am Tom Emmons and I am off.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18176999927647846221noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7431205768398147729.post-76519955697531819142013-06-10T19:43:00.001-07:002013-06-10T19:43:02.937-07:00Alien pees chloroform joke, explains the abductionsAnonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18176999927647846221noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7431205768398147729.post-77507049303733011142013-06-05T09:13:00.001-07:002013-06-05T09:13:45.339-07:00I GOT 3RD PLACE!I did get 3rd place in a comedy competition at The Comedy Zone, Charlotte. I am super thrilled to have been a part of this awesome experience. Every joke I told HIT and uproarious laughter ensued. It was a swell performance and perhaps my best yet. I relish the memory of being on that stage for those few short minutes and I look forward to working with some of those comics again. Thanks to Comedy Zone and Debbie Millwater for being so great to work with and so supportive of live comedy. As with most competitions, this one was heavily influenced by the "bringer" element. People with tons of friends, (make me wonder why they do comedy), get their friends to attend the show and vote for them. I brought more friends than usual... ONE person. I rarely ever have friends in attendance and I don't begrudge them for that. I simply don't have many close friends. I'm ok with that. I'm off topic. I only say this to say that I must have performed well in order to garnish enough votes to place. I loved the experience and I can't wait to get on stage again. Oh comedy, you seductive mistress of the night.
"The Open Mic of Charlotte Finale was held on June 4, 2013.
Tom Emmons took 3rd place and a cash prize of $25. It was a heated battle for first. Jarred Kreger walked away with 2nd place and a cash prize of $50. Our season Champion and winner of the final show of The Open Mic of Charlotte was Ed Mabrey. Ed won a week of paid work at The Comedy Zone Charlotte!!
The competition was held at The Comedy Zone Charlotte at NC Music Factory in Charlotte NC.

Actually had punches thrown to the face of a comic on stage and to the heckler who rushed the stage. Thanks to the "Godfather of Greenville Comedy" for breaking it up. My one year birthday was swell and I have yet to be punched by a heckler.
<h3 style="font-weight: normal;font-family:georgia;" class="UIIntentionalStory_Message" ft="{"type":"msg"}">Those were the highlights, I elaborate below.

<h3 style="font-weight: normal;font-family:georgia;" class="UIIntentionalStory_Message" ft="{"type":"msg"}">The guy who was gonged off stage had on a shirt that read, "Got Wood?" and a Georgia hat. He had been talking to several comics on stage during most of the show. The comic performing after him, (who didn't know "got wood/Georgia hat" had been gonged off stage), said that he was confused by the shirt and asked him if he was gay. This set him off because he is crazy. The comic was getting at the idea of "who are you asking "got wood?" It must be other guys. "And a Georgia hat, you must be gay" states the comic. "Got Wood" declares, "Say that again, you know what you said!" "Say what" replies the comic, "That you're gay?" "Got Wood" says, "That's it!" throws off his hat and rushes 10 feet onto the stage truly surprising the comic. Nick Shaheen and others sprang into action and only a couple of hits landed. They did however land quite solidly on the face of both parties involved. None of that, glancing off the ear, girly flailing action. So, the guy was thrown out of the bar permanently. And, we laughed and retold the story many times... oh we laughed. I came home, got my pre-bedtime facebook fix and went to sleep. I awoke and jacked in, to receive my first morning hit of facebook and detailed the events of last evening. Then, I clicked "comment".
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18176999927647846221noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7431205768398147729.post-11275844703575028732010-07-10T11:32:00.000-07:002010-07-10T11:40:04.302-07:00My Pagesfacebook is surely what I use the most.
www.facebook.com/tomemmonscomedy
www.twitter.com/tomemmonscomedy
www.youtube.com/tomemmons
www.myspace.com/tomemmons
www.myspace.com/seussthing
www.wix.com/tomemmons/tomemmons

No Expectations Comedy fan page:
http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=121203768589&ref=mfAnonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18176999927647846221noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7431205768398147729.post-84489665027257443562010-07-10T10:01:00.000-07:002010-07-11T11:27:37.590-07:00Cirkus performaceThe Big Top Cabaret presented a fine variety show last evening. The event was hosted by Thee Inner Cirkus and emceed by my pal and fellow comic Charlie Grey. It was truly a memorable evening of splendid performances in a wide range of genres. Fire Dancing to live music which would make Danny Elfman proud. Belly Dancing, Glass Eating, Hula Hooping, Stand Up Comedy and Singers with tiny hats all came together to present Ground Zero with a truly memorable collaboration which I had never before been a part of. The audience was a treat as well with what I assume is the usual fare for the venue of very unique misfits in such numbers that the frat boys stand out as the extreme minority. (Which explains why they responded so well to a joke about being spanked.) Original performances of a diverse variety of art forms in the upstate is one of the things that I love about living in Greenville. I look forward to the next collaborative effort with Thee Inner Cirkus.
